MADISON – Today Gov. Scott Walker, Speaker Robin Vos and Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald announced a job package of small bills that they labeled a cure to economic woes they have failed to address in Wisconsin. Some have merit and offer ideas worth exploring – but the Republican leaders again raised expectations by claiming these would create the 250,000 jobs that Gov. Walker promised, even as in a separate press account today, Walker again backed away from his jobs promise and attempted to cover his failure on jobs by again trying to move the goal post and count jobs differently.

In this announcement of a sparse jobs agenda, the Republican leaders continued to indicate no intention to take up any of the many jobs bills Democrats have forwarded, some of which have been drafted and ready to go since January 2011.  In response, Assembly Democratic leader Peter Barca (D-Kenosha) released this statement:

“Republicans are clearly nervous as they see Wisconsin fall farther and farther behind in job creation and wage growth. So they took an assortment of minor bills and proclaimed that they are going to reverse the negative direction they have taken the Wisconsin economy for the last two-and-a-half years.

“Sadly, Wisconsin is dead last in the Midwest and among the worst in the country at job creation because Republicans have put socially extreme bills and jobs for themselves and their political cronies before the middle-class families of Wisconsin.

“At a time Wisconsin needs big, bold action, today Republicans announced baby steps.  No amount of money spent on television ads will be able to hide the fact that Republicans have not prioritized economic recovery and job creation in our state. They made anti-education, anti-worker, anti-healthcare, anti-women agendas their first priorities and allowed the results of a global recession to fester in our state that once proudly led the nation.  It is not too late, however, for Republicans to change course and truly take bold strides forward on jobs for middle-class families. If they do, Democrats stand ready to join them.”
