Orlando Verdecia Receives The Marcus Corporation 2017 Ben Marcus Humanitarian Award
Verdecia’s true calling is serving the community.
The Ben Marcus Humanitarian Award, named after Marcus Corporation founder and committed community advocate Ben Marcus, builds on the company’s legacy of community involvement by recognizing exceptional associates who have gone above and beyond in their volunteering for others.
Verdecia’s true calling is serving the community, which is evident with his over 1,700 hours spent volunteering as a tutor, mentor and role model through City Year’s AmeriCorps program from 2014 to 2015. These many hours turned into a career for him as he is now an impact manager for City Year Milwaukee, an education organization that unites young people for a year of service in public schools. Verdecia is also part of the organization’s alumni board and participates in City Year’s day of service on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and other days throughout the year as the group volunteers throughout the city.
Verdecia’s vast experience with youth education and volunteering has made him want to do even more. This year, he is creating his own scholarship for young African-American and Hispanic males within Milwaukee Public Schools. While he is still in the planning process, his goal is to create a scholarship by the end of 2019 that will help enable talented, driven and dedicated young men to further their education and be the change makers of tomorrow. He hopes his dedication and commitment to his community and others will make a lasting impact for generations to come.
To recognize his incredible commitment to the community, The Marcus Corporation donated $1,000 to the charity of Verdecia’s choice, YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee Black Achievers Program.
