Rep. Chris Taylor’s statement on Democrats’ proposal supporting funding for our public school children

MADISON – Today, Democratic lawmakers, standing with State Superintendent Tony Evers, laid out a responsible, fair funding proposal for the approximate 870,000 school children throughout Wisconsin who attend public schools. Rep. Chris Taylor issued the following statement:
“Wisconsin had a proud history of leading the nation in outstanding public schools. However, in the last budget, our public school children endured the biggest cut to public education in our state’s history. This budget, even in the face of a budget surplus, Republicans have thrown crumbs to our public school children in a per pupil increase that doesn’t even keep up with rising costs. Simultaneously, they are preparing to authorize in their budget a whole new private school system funded with taxpayer money and little accountability, in addition to a massive tax break for wealthy parents sending their children to private schools.
“The Fair Funding proposal unveiled today by Democrats is the right thing to do for our public school children and neighborhood schools and guarantees a certain amount of needed funding for all public school students while keeping property taxes in check. If you want to clearly see the priorities of lawmakers, look at their budgets. Our plan prioritizes our children and the future of this state, rather than the special interest voucher movement just looking to make a buck.”
