Harry & Peg Bradley’s Backyard Barbecue, August 24
Sixth Annual Fundraiser to Benefit Lynden’s Education Programs
Each year, the Lynden Sculpture Garden throws a backyard barbecue to support its extensive place-based K-12 education programs. The informal event features a feast of local, sustainable foods prepared by chef Dave Swanson of Braise, libations from Brenner Brewing, entertainment including close-up magic from Matthew Teague, music by Nickel & Rose and members of the Nathan Hale High School Orchestra Ensemble, hands-on art and nature activities, a silent auction, and more. This year’s barbecue is scheduled for Thursday, August 24, 2017 from 5 pm to 8 pm and takes place at Lynden, 2145 West Brown Deer Road, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, 53217. Tickets are $75 for individuals, $175 for a family of four, and extra children’s tickets are available for $25. They may be purchased online at http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/bbq, by phone at 414-446-8794, or in person at the sculpture garden. Tickets must be purchased in advance. The proceeds from the Backyard Barbecue enable Lynden to serve more than 4,000 children each year with programs ranging from hands-on field trips, to summer camps, to weekly art drop-ins.
The 2017 Backyard Barbecue is sponsored by the ECAB Investment Group of Baird Private Wealth Management, with additional support from Uihlein-Wilson Architects, Stafford Rosenbaum LLP, Braise, Brenner Brewing Co., and several individual donors. Media support comes from WUWM.

Since opening to the public in 2010, Lynden has become a laboratory–for artists, educators, and students–that explores the intersection of art and nature. In our education programs, we define this intersection broadly to include community and culture. Partnering with the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Art Education program, we have used Lynden’s unique resources to develop a highly collaborative, urban-facing, place-based approach to K-12 education and a companion teacher professional development program. This approach is informed by principles of attentive living, principles that are derived from an in-depth exploration of place. Research demonstrates that grounding learning in local phenomena and place creates new ways of thinking, knowing, and representing. Aesthetic experience is an essential process for making sense of the places and communities that define us. Children care for the place they live when they are able to discover its intrinsic value. By integrating hands-on artmaking with outdoor exploration and an experiential learning process, we give children the tools–watching, recording, experimenting, creating, expressing feelings–to discover, connect with, and contribute to their home and school neighborhoods.
