Standing on Their Shoulders: Memories of Bronzeville, presented by KnowThyself, opens Thursday with reception at MPS’ Milwaukee High School of the Arts
MILWAUKEE (March 7, 2013) – A student-produced exhibit opening Thursday at Milwaukee Public Schools’ Milwaukee High School of the Arts honors the memory of the city’s historic Bronzeville neighborhood.
Standing on Their Shoulders: Memories of Bronzeville, presented by KnowThyself, features murals, essays, photographs and recorded interviews that highlight Bronzeville, the economic and cultural center of Milwaukee’s African-American community from the early 1900s to the middle of the 20th century.
The exhibit opens to the public with a reception Thursday from 4:15 p.m. to 7 p.m. at MHSA, 2300 W. Highland Avenue, Milwaukee 53233. MHSA jazz musicians and the MHSA Choral Jazz Ensemble will perform music from the period. Public access to the show will continue on school days through March 22, from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. and from 2:15 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. only.
Funding for the exhibit comes from the Greater Milwaukee Foundation’s Mary L. Nohl Fund and KnowThyself, a character development and creative expression program for MPS middle and high school students in 10 schools.
Photographer Paul Calhoun directed the exhibit, which features the work of MHSA students and contributions from radio producer Ben Calhoun, artist Brad Anthony Bernard, MHSA English teacher Kate DeLutio, jazz singer Adekola Adedapo and Wisconsin Black Historical Society Director Clayborn Benson.
