The Old Made New

Three projects near downtown are helping to rebuild a neighborhood and regenerate a river.

By - Nov 2nd, 2012 04:08 pm

The sound of saws spinning and metal mashing were heard from Walker’s Point to the Historic Third Ward.  The sounds stemmed from three projects that continue the redevelopment of near downtown neighborhoods.

In Walker’s Point two projects just off S. 2nd St. are moving along.  Crews are working on the Water Council’s future home at 223 W. Pittsburgh Ave (soon to be Freshwater Way). And Developers Kyle Strigenz and Tyler Hawley are converting a former clothing factory and warehouse, located at 710 S. 3rd St., into a 50-unit apartment building. Tom Daykin reported on October 31st, 2012 that work would begin immediately on this project, and in fact it has.

In the Third Ward the city-financed section of the Riverwalk, which will connect MIAD to Ryan Braun’s, is slowly flowing towards completion, finishing a project that has helped make the once-dormant river an active, exciting place.

Thanks so much for the Friday photos. For quite awhile now I have been meaning to thank Urban Milwaukee for sharing. I gather that many of your readers are former-Milwaukeeans; these photos have helped keep us all informed of what is going on in our wonderful city.

Just curious but what is going on with the Potowatomi Hotel? Have they put up a crane yet? I live in Minneapolis so I check out your site often to get my MKE fix.
    Thx
    Jack

@Jack Good question. I haven’t been down to the site in a bit, but I’ll get there soon for some photos.

I am excited for the remaking of the Junior House – down the block from my own house. The Water Accelerator will also be a welcomed addition to our Walker’s Point neighborhood. Lots happening south of downtown. Several additional projects in the works too – will be fun to announce in the months ahead. I am especially grateful that Tyler Hawley is not only investing in this area, but he is also a resident and neighbor.
