Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele Welcomes Legislature to 2017-2018 Session

MILWAUKEE – On Inauguration Day in Wisconsin, Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele welcomed the state Legislature to the 2017-2018 session with the following statement.

“Congratulations and welcome to the members of the 2017-2018 legislative session. A New Year — and a new session — is a good time to remind ourselves that the challenges we face are most productively addressed when we face them together, put our energy into looking for allies and answers rather than enemies and arguments, and seek solutions to our common problems, not find problems with solutions. It is incumbent upon all of us as elected officials to send a strong message to the people we are fortunate enough to represent that we will work together.

“I welcome the opportunity to form relationships with new members and continue conversations with returning members about the challenges and opportunities facing both Milwaukee County and our state.

“The issues we tackle in Milwaukee County aren’t unique to Milwaukee. Everyone in Wisconsin wants to see sustainable infrastructure that is funded fairly and equitably, better roads and highways, clean and transparent government that empowers people, affordable and reliable transit that gets people to and from good-paying jobs, investments in our parks and natural spaces, continued reforms to our juvenile justice system, and a real commitment to eliminating the opioid epidemic – just to start. With the support of the legislature, we can make significant progress on these issues that impact our shared constituencies.

“It’s been said many times, but the idea that what unites us is greater than what divides us holds true now more than ever. Our state and our country are always stronger when we work in that spirit. I pledge to work with leaders on both sides of the aisle in both chambers of the legislative body to seek and support those partners and solutions. I look forward to the session to come.”
