MILWAUKEE – Rep. David Bowen (D-Milwaukee) released the following statement about the proposed “Blue Day Rally” happening at the Bavarian Bierhaus in Glendale this Sunday featuring Gov. Walker and members of the City of Milwaukee Common Council:

“It is critical with the consistent situations of disproportionate black citizens killed by the unnecessary use of lethal force by law enforcement that this upcoming police support event being attended by various political leaders, including our own Governor, highlight the need for police accountability in order to prevent future incidents rooted in the disregard of the value of black lives. Governor Walker and others who stand with him have a tremendous opportunity to prove that they are finally listening to the concerns of many around our state who believe that both the Police and the citizens that they serve deserve the chance to live and make it back home to their families. Dontre Hamilton, a mentally ill young black man who was shot 14 times by a Milwaukee Police Officer 6 miles from where the event will be held, deserved the chance to make it back home to his family.

Not recognizing the need for police accountability would be detrimental to the progress that must be made to end the frustrations that many black families have when they, too, worry if their sons and daughters, fathers and mothers will make it back home safely after interaction with Police. This event will probably be used as a political platform to tell a captive Police audience what they may want to hear but it has the potential be used as a support platform to tell them what they need to hear. What the whole state needs to hear. That Black Lives must matter and those who advocate for them need this community’s support too.”

In light of the killing that the MPD just committed– happened today (8/13) at 44th & Auer– I wish they’d reconsider moving the event to Sherman Park. Tomorrow might be better than sunday tho, I don’t know, look up Program the Parks on fb and ask them maybe. All summer there’s been a handful of people out there, feeding our young ones, providing guidance and looking out for them, and now a cop has gone and killed someone, shot him in the back according to witnesses at the scene. The urban areas are where most of this stuff happens anyway. A lot of people hurt and angry.
