MILWAUKEE – Rep. David Bowen (D-Milwaukee) released the following statement concerning an announcement expected tomorrow regarding end use jobs in the new Bucks arena district:

“I am pleased that labor representatives have been successful in negotiating with the Bucks to pay a living wage and prioritize hiring local workers – a commitment the Bucks were unwilling to make last summer while lobbying for $400 million in taxpayer funding for the arena.

“The fact we are finally beginning to see written guarantees instead of verbal agreements is a good first step. While tomorrow we will hear about an agreement that ensures half of end use jobs are available to Milwaukee residents from our highest poverty neighborhoods, there is still a long way to go. I call on all stakeholders at the table to prioritize doing business with minority contractors at the same rate or greater than when Miller Park was built despite no law having required them to do so. I will continue to closely follow how contractors, workers, and applicants are treated in order to ensure promises made to the community will be kept. And, despite the challenges we have faced as I have worked in my role as an advocate for taxpayers and my constituents, I will continue to reach out to the Bucks to try to work together to ensure inclusiveness is a priority in the arena district.”
