Public deserves updates on City Hall repair investigation

While the chair of the Public Works Committee seems to be pre-occupied with doing all he can to keep alive possible options for preserving the crumbling Sydney Hih (an eyesore of a building), he is ignoring issues with our beloved National Historic Landmark – City Hall.

In fact, the chair seems oblivious to the fact that the Common Council has mandated that the Department of Public Works provide regular, required reports on the investigation into the exterior restoration work at City Hall (see Council file # 111320). The department was supposed to provide its first status report in April 2012, but for unknown reasons, the chair of Public Works did not schedule it until today. And today, he again delayed the report. Due to the August recess, the next Public Works meeting won’t be until September 12. And there’s no guarantee the report will be on the agenda.

But part of the kicker to today’s kick down the road is this: the chair DID allow a file to be heard today concerning work needed to repair the foundation of City Hall. He did this knowing full well that the Council has previously approved legislation requiring that the issues pertaining to the crumbling City Hall terra cotta be settled first – before action should go forward on the foundation issues.

I’m starting to wonder if the chair of the Public Works Committee needs a refresher course on timely due diligence and proper procedure. But for now, I am calling on him to schedule the status update on the people’s building before the August recess so the people have some idea about what’s going on with one of the city’s most important landmarks.
