Supt. Driver, Bucks star Jabari Parker invite MPS families to summit on attendance
A resource fair, breakout listening sessions, child care, translation services and a dinner are provided.
MILWAUKEE (January 5, 2016) – Milwaukee Public Schools families are invited to join Superintendent Dr. Darienne Driver and Milwaukee Bucks forward Jabari Parker on January 11 for a summit focused on improving student attendance.
Families will have the opportunity to share their ideas on how to improve student attendance. Jabari Parker and Dr. Driver will also unveil a new incentive program to encourage student attendance during the summit, on Monday, January 11, 2016 from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at MPS’ James Madison Academic Campus, 8135 W. Florist Avenue, Milwaukee 53218.
A resource fair, breakout listening sessions, child care, translation services and a dinner are provided. The event is free for MPS families. They should RSVP at mpsmke.com/familyroundtable or by calling (414) 475-8285.
Media are invited and welcome to attend. Jabari Parker is scheduled to speak at 6:15 p.m., followed by Dr. Driver.
The attendance summit is the latest in a series of family roundtables hosted by Dr. Driver. The focus on attendance at this roundtable is tied to the district’s overall effort to improve attendance. Efforts include the launch of the “Be in School” campaign with Jabari and the Bucks, the creation of attendance liaison positions and an October gathering of students to hear their ideas on effective strategies to improve attendance. MPS’ overall attendance rate is about 90%, but the average for high school students is lower, creating a barrier to graduation and post-graduation success.
“Being in school all day every day is a critical first step on the path to a successful life after graduation,” Dr. Driver said. “After working with families and receiving student input, we’re excited to hear more feedback about successful strategies to put more students on that path.”
