MPS to Hold Community Meetings on Lincoln Avenue School’s Future
Public Can Attend in Person or Livestream the Sessions on July 13-14
(MILWAUKEE) — Milwaukee Public Schools will hold meetings for the community on July 13 and 14 at the Boys & Girls Club at Rogers Street Academy, in the aftermath of the five-alarm fire June 30 that destroyed Lincoln Avenue School.
At the meetings, district leaders will present plans for Lincoln students for the coming school year and will take questions afterward. The community may attend in person or livestream the sessions, which will be at 9 a.m. Monday, July 13, and 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 14. Spanish interpreters will be on hand.
The public can livestream the July 13 meeting here, and the July 14 meeting here.
The public may park in the lot in front of the Don & Sallie Davis Boys & Girls Club’s main entrance, 2404 W. Rogers St., Milwaukee, 53204, or on nearby streets. The Boys & Girls Club is connected to MPS’s Rogers Street Academy.
The district has been in steady communication with families and staff since the fire. District leadership met July 2 with the Lincoln Avenue School Engagement Council (SEC) to discuss plans for the school year, followed by a July 8 meeting with staff. The district will meet with families on July 9.
The district’s goal is to keep the school community together, with all students from the K3-grade 5 school attending classes in one location.
Because of the heavy damage to the school caused by the fire, the city of Milwaukee Historic Preservation Commission on July 6 approved demolition of the building.
Lincoln Avenue School, which is at 1817 W. Lincoln Ave., has educated generations of Milwaukee children since 1917.
Milwaukee Public Schools is committed to accelerating student achievement, building positive relationships between youth and adults, and cultivating leadership at all levels.
