Rep. Barca Statement on Passage of Fast-Tracked 20-Week Abortion Ban

MADISON – Today Assembly Democratic Leader Peter Barca (D-Kenosha) issued the following statement on the extreme bill to ban access to abortions after 20 weeks:

“I was extremely surprised, in the midst of so much litigation across the country on this issue, that the Republicans would pass a 20-week abortion bill, much less a bill we believe would mirror the most extreme in the nation, with no exceptions for rape or incest. Medical groups are unified in their opposition to this irresponsible bill because it interferes with the doctor-patient relationship, and they recognize the complex medical situations women often face that this bill could jeopardize.

“The timing of this bill is clearly intended to distract citizens of the state from the Republicans’ disastrous and harmful state budget. Equally clear is that Governor Walker demanded this bill come to his desk before he announces his presidential campaign Monday, because as he has demonstrated many times, he cares more about catering to extreme conservative, presidential primary voters than the health of women or babies.”
