Buffalo Wings Over Milwaukee
New wings franchise coming to Brady Street and new downtown food truck for hamburger lovers.
The way things are going, Milwaukee may soon offer more Buffalo wings than Buffalo. The latest to announce a new opening is Wings Over, the national franchise operation which adopts a local name (Wings Over Pittsburgh, Wings Over Madison) in each city where a new franchise is opened. Madison was its first location in Wisconsin and Milwaukee will be the second, with a Wings Over Milwaukee scheduled to open in October, at 1434 E. Brady St., according to the company’s website.
Wings Over Milwaukee offers a variety of chicken wings ranging from Honey BBQ to Jamaican Jerk to Cajun Blackened Dry Rub. Open until 3am on the weekends, late night foodies can also opt for buffalo wings with a heat range numbered one to five and a menu of slow cooked pork ribs, chicken sandwiches, wraps and sides. For take-home customers, each franchise also offers boneless or bone-in wings by the pound or wings in combination with ribs and sides.
We reported on the upcoming opening of Movida two weeks ago. The restaurant officially opened on Aug 19 at 524 S. 2nd St., the former location of INdustri Cafe. Movida, inspired by the countercultural movement of 1975 Madrid, aims to make the “unacceptable acceptable.”
The restaurant presents a short and powerful menu that includes aged goat, sheep or cow cheeses and cured meats ($5-11). Some tapas options include piquillo peppers stuffed with chorizo and manchego cheese ($7), salt cod potato fritters ($8), and a “Broken Egg” dish made with duck egg, potatoes and chorizo ($7.5). Movida’s signature paella incorporates fried frog leg and snail with beans, piquillo peppers and goat cheese ($15).
The innovative cocktail menu includes a signature gin and tonic made with candied serrano chili, lemon, and lime juice while the Spanish Margarita is made with a clear tequila, ancho chili liqueur, and rhubarb tea, a spirit made from (whew) beet, carrot, lemon, petitgrain, cardamom, cane sugar, and rhubarb. The sangria is presented simply, with a vanilla-cinnamon red or strawberry-kiwi white.
Oscar’s Pub & Grill, 1712 W. Pierce St., debuted its new food truck Oscar’s On A Roll August 22nd at Mexican Fiesta. Alongside the classic cheeseburger and hamburger, the menu includes their featured black angus burgers, The Big O (with chipotle jack cheese, smoked gouda, hickory bacon, chorizo, fried onions and jalapenos), The Big Gringo (Wisconsin white cheddar & American cheese and thick-cut hickory smoked bacon), and Oscar’s Fries, a sweet potato fry seasoned with chipotle and cinnamon and served with a chipotle dipping sauce. The food truck can be found Downtown at both Red Arrow Park and at W. Wisconsin Ave. for the weekly lunch rush.
We’ve reported previously on the upcoming opening of Alderaan Coffee, at 1560 N. Water St., in the Flatiron Building. More details have been reported as to the cafe’s offerings.
Alderaan will feature coffees from roasters across the country and make its own flavored syrups and non-dairy milks, including French lavendar and vanilla salted caramel syrups. The owners are two brothers, Daniel Neumann of Bayside and his brother David, based in New York City. Gimme Coffee from New York will be among the first the cafe offers.
The name references the movie Star Wars — Alderaan is the plant Princess Leia comes from — but the cafe won’t have a movie theme. It will, however, have tables surrounded by three walls of oversized windows and an elevated patio with additional seating, where you can watch those earthbound cars or bicycles flying by.
