Lots to talk about this week

Lectures and talks at the Milwaukee Art Museum, UWM, and Villa Terrace offer a twist on your usual Thursday, and Tory Folliard closes its vibrant "Color!" exhibit.

There is plenty to look at, and listen to, in this week’s Art Date. Thursday offers a number of exciting gallery talks, and Saturday is the last chance to see the brilliantly-hued Color! exhibition at Tory Folliard.

THURSDAY, MARCH 7 

Milwaukee Art Museum’s Target Free First Thursday
Color Rush: 75 Years of Color Photography in America

Express Talk tours at 12 and 5:30 p.m.

Don’t miss this month’s free opportunity to see Color Rush and the many other exhibits open as the spring dawns. Twice during the day (12 and 5), a stroll through this feature exhibition will include a gallery talk about the fascinating history of color photography. Lecture: The Carbro Printing Process

Mark Osterman, from the George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film in Rochester, New York, will be the featured speaker of the evening. He will discuss Carbro prints, featured in the Color Rush exhibition, and their role in the proliferation of color images through the 20th century. Admission is free.

Dürer to Dine: 500 Years of Printmaking

This exhibition surveys five centuries of printmaking, and includes artistic luminaries such as Rembrandt, Whistler, Picasso, plus many others. The gallery opening is celebrated with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m., featuring a talk by curator Christa Story at 5:30. The exhibition continues through March 28.

Riley Humler, a noted collector of Rookwood pottery and donor to the current exhibition, will give an informal talk on Rookwood in the 1920s, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The exhibition surveys the inventive styles of this iconic American design studio, and continues through April 7. Lighten up the winter blues with a veritable explosion of brilliant hues. The delights of the artist’s palette are explored in paintings, sculpture, and three-dimensional work by ten artists using a variety of mediums. Color unifies, but their individual approaches set each apart. The exhibition closes Saturday, March 9.
