January 2010 Gallery Guide

As I write this, I’m sitting at Alterra enjoying their Holiday Blend coffee. The festive moniker of this mug reminds me that the holidays have drifted quickly as we ride the chilly January wind into the New Year. For museums and galleries, it’s a transitional time as well. Old shows are closing, and new ones wait in the wings. A word of advance warning — mark your calendars for Gallery Night and Day — coming up on Jan. 15 and 16.

Until then, don’t let the cold get you down. Fulfill your resolutions to try something new by getting out and catching some of the exhibitions around town.

Marilyn Annin – Materials: Reconfigured

The current featured exhibition shows what Marilyn Annin terms her “landscapes” — though they’re like no land you’ve visited before. These are clothing-like forms that recall the angular styles of the ’60s and ’70s with playful surface details and textures created from buttons, shells, pop-top pull-tabs and plenty of hanging threads.

A permanent installation of ironwork by the illustrious Cyril Colnik (Austrian, 1871-1958) makes for delightful afternoon viewing. Be prepared to look at the details — these pieces aren’t monsterworks where the gist is to be had from several feet away. Pause, observe and admire Colnik’s dexterous transformations of iron into fragile petals and flowing ornaments.

Wisconsin Master’s Series – Emily Groom

The companion museum to the Villa Terrace, the Charles Allis continues its tradition of the Wisconsin Master’s Series with Impressionist-flavored images of nature by Wisconsin artist and art teacher Emily Groom (1875-1975).

Persian Visions: Contemporary Photography from Iran

This haunting exhibition features images of Iran that draw poignantly from past history and present conditions. It is the first survey of contemporary Iranian photograph to travel to the United States.

There’s nothing like mixing things up a bit, and the Haggerty has done that with illuminating juxtapositions of works from multiple time periods and styles, and forge new connections through shared themes. Art history timelines be damned.

Green Furniture Design
November 12, 2009 — March 14, 2010

Now that Andy Warhol is packing up to leave town (the crowds on the final weekend were impressive to say the least — some of the largest I’ve seen at MAM), don’t forget that there are plenty of other things to see at our winged institution.

One of the most unique exhibitions is Green Furniture Design, which inspires all sorts of new ideas in home decoration and the form and function of interior furnishings. Chairs are gorgeous and comfy when created from reclaimed tires, and paper exerts super strength when fashioned into a table/stool. On Saturday, Jan. 30, MAM will host the Green Fair with a day of activities and events highlighting sustainable and eco-friendly ethos.

Fifty Works for Fifty States: The Dorothy and Herbert Vogel Collection
December 17, 2010 — March 25, 2010

This unassuming couple was a powerhouse in the New York art world, amassing an amazing collection of more than 4,000 works from contemporary artists, while keeping to a shoestring budget. Recently the subject of the extraordinary documentary Herb and Dorothy, the Vogels have gifted institutions in each of the 50 states 50 works for their permanent collection. This exhibition welcomes the Vogels’ gift to the Milwaukee Art Museum.
