Opening Date Revealed for New York-Style Italian Restaurant
Housemade pastas, sandwiches and breakfast service will anchor new downtown restaurant.

One of the most anticipated openings of the year will take place Sept. 15, when Il Ponte debuts at 814 E. Mason St., inside Northwestern Mutual North Building, which is nearing the end of a major overhaul.
The New York-style Italian eatery will be the second Milwaukee restaurant from owners Adam Siegel and Daria Aitken-Siegel, who also operate the nearby Lupi & Iris.
Il Ponte promises a more casual approach than its Mediterranean-inspired sibling, serving housemade pastas with red sauce, sandwiches and modern riffs on traditional Italian dishes. Breakfast with bar seating and grab-and-go options will contribute to the restaurant’s “everyday” atmosphere, according to a news release.
The menu, though not yet released in its entirety, will take inspiration from Aitken-Siegel’s New York roots and Neapolitan heritage. She’ll hold dual roles at the restaurant, serving as a co-owner and in-house florist/floral designer.
Siegel, a James Beard Award-winning chef, will lead the kitchen. His career includes leadership roles at more than a dozen Milwaukee-area venues, as well as restaurants in Chicago, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and Imola, Italy, in addition to his work at Lupi & Iris.
Il Ponte, which means “the bridge” in Italian, reflects the power of food as a catalyst for connection. It’s also a nod to a physical detail in the building, the skywalk joining the $500 million new development to the Northwestern Mutual Tower & Commons.
“We love Milwaukee and the people who live here. It’s why we want to bring them together and offer the best possible service and experience in the city,” said Aitken-Siegel in a statement. “Il Ponte is a place where our residents can spend time together and know they’ll be taken care of.”
Il Ponte will occupy a ground-level space with 155 seats in its 7,000-square-foot dining room. Interior design touches include a bold color palette, custom wood trim and finishes by Three Sixty and custom tabletops from The Urban Craftsman.
Eppstein Uhen Architects (EAU) of Milwaukee served as the architect for the project, while Oxeland Group is the general contractor.
“We’re honored that Northwestern Mutual entrusts us to be a prime tenant in their new development, recognizing we share the same goal of contributing to a thriving East Town neighborhood in Milwaukee,” Aitken-Siegel said.
The official opening follows a series of preview dinners, or Sunday Suppers, hosted at Lupi & Iris in recent months. Menus for those events featured hearty salads, lasagna layered with handmade pasta, chicken piccata, tiramisu and other comforting dishes.
