Café Hollander, which has multiple locations including one at 2608 N. Downer Ave. and another in Wauwatosa, is celebrating its 15th birthday this year. To commemorate the milestone, the restaurant has unveiled its new summer menu, which features over 20 new items, as well as fresh takes on traditional Dutch and Belgian dishes. Lori Fredrich reports:

Among (the new Brunch items) is the over-the-top Uitsmijter Croissant (Outs-My-Ter). Roughly translated into English, the word “uitsmijter” means “to eject forcefully.” And it’s an apt name for a dish which was often served at cafes late at night or in the wee hours of the morning, right around the time area bouncers were giving local bar-goers the boot.

Guests will also find a taste of the Netherlands on the lunch and dinner menus. First up, you’ll find Smorrebrod (Smore-Eh-Brod), casual open-face sandwiches often served at Dutch pubs alongside a bier.

The lunch and dinner menus are also littered with lighter fare, including numerous vegetarian options, as well as the option to substitute a variety of sides like cucumber salad, cauliflower tabouli, fruit or falafel for the usual frites for an extra $1 or $2.

New AsianRican Restaurant For Lincoln Ave.

A new Asian-Puerto Rican fusion restaurant is coming to Lincoln Ave. at 3300 W. Lincoln Ave. AsianRican Foods, which started as a pop-up, is moving into the former Junior’s Cocktail Lounge. Graham Kilmer reports:

A post to the business’ Facebook page reads, “We are working hard to reopen and can’t wait to see you all again.”

The AsianRican menu blends the two cuisines for which it’s named, offering traditionally Asian entrees like Pepper Steak side by side with Chicken Pinchos, or egg rolls and empanadas.

In the permit applications filed with the city, Valcarcel indicates she plans to make AsianRican more than a restaurant at the Lincoln Avenue location. She notes that in the future she plans to operate a community food pantry at the location.

Walker’s Point Hemp Store Becoming Cafe

The owners of Canni Hemp Company located at 810 S. 5th St. are steering their business in a new direction. The hemp and CBD shop will soon become a cafe and event space. If all goes according to plan, the space would begin hosting events this summer and open the cafe in the beginning of 2023. Kilmer reports:

The plan for the new business model is to operate a cafe and event space that maintains the Canni branding and a reduced retail component, selling some of Canni’s core products. Plant said the business is being modeled after a cafe in New York City called The Alchemist’s Kitchen that has a retail component.

… the owners of Canni are planning to introduce a plant-based drink called Kava that will serve as a non-alcoholic option. Kava is made from the root of the Kava plant, which is native to islands in the western Pacific Ocean, according to the U.S National Institutes of Health.

The cafe will also sell wine and beer, and CBD-infused cocktails – they are a cannabis company after all. The plan, Plant said, is also to organize and host small events, like live music; as well as rent space for events.

Sugar Maple Adds State’s First THC Cocktail Menu

The Sugar Maple, a Bay View bar known for its extensive craft beer list, has been expanding its menu as of late. Its newest addition is Wisconsin’s first THC cocktail menu — featuring four non-alcoholic cocktails that utilize Delta 8 THC, a natural cannabinoid compound found in small traces in hemp and cannabis plants. Each cocktail is made with a 5mg dose of Delta 8. Michael Holloway reports:

Take, for example, the “Spicy Doinks.” It’s essentially a spicy Moscow Mule, with jalapeno shrub, lime and ginger beer. The capsaicin from the jalapeno and the gingerol in the ginger beer simulate the burn of alcohol, while a 5mg dose of Delta-8 — a quarter of the recommended dosage — provides the buzz.

The menu also includes two refreshing, fruity cocktails just in time for summer — both of which are (Harrison) Browning and (Xay) Matable’s personal favorites. The “Pineapple Express” is made of a pineapple and mint syrup, coconut water and Untitled Art Lemon Lime CDB Seltzer. The “Fresa Flora” features strawberry shrub and Untitled Art Grapefruit CBD Seltzer.

And then there’s the “Bong Water” — proof that Sugar Maple intends for these drinks to not only be a new experience for many, but a fun one. Browning describes it as a “Michelada with hop water and Delta-8.”

Now Closing: Marty’s Pizza in Brookfield

A staple restaurant in Brookfield has closed after 65 years in business. Marty’s Pizza, located at 16630 W. Bluemound Rd., had operated in Brookfield since 1957, changing owners in 1980, more than four decades ago. It shut its doors for good on May 20. The pizza restaurant’s other location in Delafield remains open. Evan Casey reports:

A manager at the Brookfield location confirmed the closing but declined to speak with a reporter on Thursday.

Signs in front of the restaurant and social media postings in recent weeks reveal the business was actively looking for employees.
