State Sen. Melissa Agard, Senate Democratic Leader

Senator Agard Sends Letter to Vice President Mike Pence, Calling on him to invoke the 25th Amendment

MADISON – Today, Senator Melissa Agard and other Democratic legislators sent a letter to Vice President Mike Pence calling on him to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove President Donald Trump from office following the riots orchestrated by his supporters in Washington D.C. yesterday.

Senator Melissa Agard (D-Madison) released the following statement:

“Today, my colleagues and I are calling on Vice President Pence to invoke the 25th amendment after the events that took place in our nation’s Capital yesterday. What we saw yesterday was insurrection. Rather than accepting the results of the election, extremists broke into the Capitol and attempted to overturn the results of a free and fair election. Those responsible must be held to account under federal law.

“Every leader in our nation must stand up and acknowledge that this is the moment to draw a line in the sand and remove President Trump from office before further damage is done. Because of his dangerous rhetoric, lives were put at risk and lives were lost. We cannot continue to allow this President to spew lies and conspiracy theories to incite violent acts against dedicated public servants and the general population.

“My colleagues and I support the Democrats in Wisconsin’s federal delegation who have called for the removal of the President. The actions we witnessed this week, and for the past 4 years from this President, put this beyond question.”

It can never be enough when you have someone in the White House who has no regard for the U.S. Constitution or the law.
Reckless would be leaving Trump in office.

The riot Wednesday, January 6, 2021 was a direct result of his manipulations:
    • Trump implored his base to protest, “wildly”, the constitutional process to acknowledge the election results.
    • He inflamed and incited his followers to charge the capitol to force Congress to change the results of a lawful election to keep him in power. He told them they had to “take the country back”.
    • During the riot, he was disappointed others were not as pleased with the riot as he was. He continued to call Congressional members to pressure them to vote to object to the legal election while the riot was underway.

Consider that Trump, over the last 4 years:
    • Attempted a coup on Wednesday.
    • Lied to the public over 30,000 times, normalizing lies, leading some people to believe his falsehoods.
    • Lied and corrupted the election and political process with his lies about voter fraud and a stolen election.
    • Continues to call the legitimate media “fake news”, while praising fascistic media groups putting out his propaganda.
    • Continues to use divisive rhetoric to pit citizen against citizen, to inflame the fires of racism and otherism.
    • Has plans for more “protests” for January 17 and 20.

Trump is a very dangerous, unstable individual, in the most powerful position on the planet. He should be out as President, out of the White House, and in jail.
