Last month, more that 150 readers signed up to become Urban Milwaukee members. Why are so many folks becoming supporters? We asked some of you to explain and here’s what you had to say:

“Because I value quality journalism. I trust the reporting of Urban Milwaukee to be thorough and factual.”
Maggie Kuhn

“One of the best investments I’ve made. Every day I’m able to keep up with what is happening locally and statewide. Urban Milwaukee boasts a talented group of experienced journalists who are excellent writers and know their way around the city.”
Paul Hinkfuss

“Urban Milwaukee is accessible; every morning it’s in my mail box. I look forward to news, politics, government updates, building developments, arts updates, dining news and more. In addition they throw great parties.”
Marsha Sehler

“Because it’s the only place on the internet to have a rational conversation in the comments section. Thoughtful, informed, curious people not only subscribe, but participate in the publication.”
Ian Abston

“I have relatives who have left stalwart but withering print dailies. Urban Milwaukee is doing its best to fill a vacuum for local reporting and editorial that comes from hard, underpaid work – not canned opinion or aggregation. If my paltry membership can help UM report what’s real, I’m glad to invest in it.”
Julia O’Connor

“The staff has been kind and helpful and I look forward to meeting new people in our community. It is a small price to pay for such a great organization and honestly pays for itself with many tickets for events that become available.”
Claudio Cifaldi

“Having an engaged, locally-owned source for media matters. I am a passionate believer in investing in the things that make Milwaukee great, and that definitely includes Urban Milwaukee.”
Juli Kaufmann

As those comments suggest, we are building a kind of movement in Milwaukee, of readers who want and demand good journalism and value a fiercely independent publication that champions the city and smart urban solutions — and welcomes differing views on how to make Milwaukee a better place. If that’s the kind of publication you value, if you agree with any of these comments from our members and have not yet joined, we hope you will today.

By becoming a member, not only will you help support Urban Milwaukee’s journalism, but you’ll help us continue to grow our publication, which now publishes more than 50 stories and 100 press releases per week. The perks of membership include:

  • Invitations to member-only events and online chats with a chance to meet and converse with Urban Milwaukee staff, including our periodic Beer Bashes that explore Milwaukee’s breweries

  • A chance to provide support that assures Urban Milwaukee can continue focusing on smart, substantive news coverage rather than clickbait
