A very thoughtful analysis.
John, I really appreciate this review of the intersection. I will make sure we get this to the “right eyes and ears” as we look to improve the traffic and pedestrian flow in addition to community space building and branding.

I bike through this intersection many Wednesdays and Sundays on my way to church on 35th & Highland and have to deal with speeding motorists. I’ve suggested to Kristen Bennett, our bicycle and pedestrian coordinator, a way of calming traffic by flip-flopping the bike and parking lanes in order to provide protected bike lanes and force the car traffic to slow down. I also remember having to clean up glass from a bus shelter that was destroyed in a car crash when one of the cars blew through a stop light and was t-boned. Protected bike lanes would protect bicyclists and neck down Highland Blvd. enough to make speed enforcement easier.
Protected bike lanes on Highland would calm traffic E-W and center running BRT and Light rail on N. 27th would calm it down N-S. Let’s do both!
