Business Cats rock it lo-fi

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs/surf rock amalgam's self-titled album is strong, but flows better in reverse.

Business Cats are an atonal surfy-punky-rocky-rolly trio from way east of Los Angeles whose music is, at first listen, easily dismissible as more of the same sort of stuff you’ve heard piling up on CMJ charts for the past thirty years. Go back and hear it again though, and what you’ll discover is the singer/guitarist named Veron, who growls like Karen O and acts as the band’s core. The band openly cites the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The Ty Segal Band among their chief influences, and yeah, Business Cats pretty much sound like an amalgamation of the two. I’d suggest listening to this debut elpee of theirs in reverse order, beginning with its last and strongest track, “Out Of Control”, and work yer way up the order from there. Not a bad track to start a party with either.
