This is part three of TCD’s podcast series “We don’t go past the bridge”: A Discussion on Race in MilwaukeeClick here for part one with Dasha Kelly and here for part two with Tommy Walls, Jr.

Tony Baez

Tony Baez is the president and CEO of the Council for the Spanish Speaking, located at 614 W. National Avenue on the city’s south side. Baez has been involved in efforts seeking equality and justice for Milwaukee’s Latino community for decades.

Even though positive strides have been made along the way, there is still a long way to go. Tony and I discussed the challenges of dealing with misguided perceptions of the Latino community, and how those perceptions have changed over the years as Milwaukee’s Latino population has grown.

“It behooves everybody to be able to recognize that the differences that we bring to the society enrich the society,” Baez said. “The diversity is good for all of us, and as we grow as an American community, as an American democracy, we need to do the best to make that happen.”
