Ladies and Gentlemen, the Elvii are here

You kind of had to be there.

That is the general idea behind flash mobs, whether they happen via Twitter hook-ups or when nearly a couple dozen Elvii spill out of a Potawatomi Casino limo bus and start swiveling and sneering. Flash mobs bring a sense of life and harmony to the world, only this time there were a lot more sequins.

If you were at the Mitchell International Airport around 3:45, there was A Big Hunk o’ Love happening in the terminal.  If you were at the Intermodal Station an hour later, there was a Clambake going down.  Skaters at Red Arrow Park witnessed a Roustabout, and the lobby at the Casino hall became Elvi central at 6:45 in which Seeing was Believing.

This birthday celebration weekend continues with A Tribute to the King — the premier Elvis contest in the country — at Potawatomi Casino, including a Sunday noon gospel show.  Over the course of four days, attendees will get to see a series of Elvis impersonators vying for a $25,010 cash prize to the overall winner.  There are concerts in celebration of the 1950s and 60s, including a special concert by former Grand Champion “Tribute Elvis” Ryan Pelton (along with the Elvis Imperials).  Our photographer and scene reporter Lacy Landre on Thursday night watched Packers-colored teddy bears being shot from a t-shirt gun, and the night’s winner was a much older white jumpsuited version of Elvis (appropriate, as he would have turned 77) who beat out the younger, hotter Elvis.

Lacy also returned with a plethora of photos from the Elvii’s various appearances elsewhere in town. The slideshow below features photos from Red Arrow Park on Wednesday night, and you can also find photos from one set of finals at the Northern Lights Theater here at our Flickr page. For ticketing information, visit the www.PaysBig.com website.
