TCD’s guide to holiday food drives

As part of TCD’s 2011 holiday coverage, we are highlighting ways to give back at food drives in the Milwaukee area. Help someone in need this holiday season with a donation to the food drives listed below, or contact the local food pantries or food drives in your neighborhood.

Hunger Task Force

Hunger Task Force: Lend a Helping Ham

Hunger Task Force is collecting items to fill 800 Holiday Bins with items that will be delivered to local families in need. Bins will contain fresh onions, stuffing and gravy, fresh oranges, hot cocoa mix, cheese and sausage, candy canes, potatoes, a fresh pie and the holiday ham will top it all off! Donations are accepted online or in person at 201 S. Hawley Court, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Food for the Holidays Million Meal Mission

November 1 – December 25

Brighten someone’s holiday with the gift of food! Help Feeding America provide one million meals to families across eastern Wisconsin. Help Feeding America provide 1,000,000 meals this holiday season. Donations can be made at the following locations: Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin, 1700 W. Fond du Lac Avenue, Milwaukee, Balistreri Owned and Operated Sendik’s store, Associated Bank locations in eastern Wisconsin, Stein Garden and Gifts (December 14 – 20), and Toppers Pizza.

Buy a Bag for the Hungry

November 1 – December 31

Buy a bag is back! A 20 dollar donation will buy $40 worth of nutritious natural and organic foods for the hungry. Buy A Bag in someone’s name as a gift that benefits the Hunger Task Force.

Donate at WinterFest

Feed your community hen you order WinterFest tickets early online before December 16. Log on to milwaukeewinterfest.com and use the promo code: WF2011HTF and two dollars will be donated to Hunger Task Force.

Rummage-A-Rama!

December 10 – 11, 
Wisconsin State Fair Park

Rummage-A-Rama is hosting Milwaukee’s largest indoor rummage sale event featuring new, used, and vintage items. Antiques and collectibles from local dealers and overstock and closeouts from local business owners will also be available. Admission is $4, or $2 with a donation of two non-perishable food items. Kids 12 and under are free, but are also encouraged to bring food.

Discovery World’s Holiday Food Challenge


November 25 – December 31

In the 1880s, the Challenge — a big ol’ schooner — brought needed goods and supplies to the people of Milwaukee. In the same spirit of feeding the hungry, Discovery World wants to load the deck of their life-size recreation of the 19th century ship with canned goods. Receive $5 off the admission price by bringing in three or more non-perishable food items and try to make the Challenge so heavy with food it could sink.

Candy Cane Lane


November 25 – December 26

Candy Cane Lane is a west side tradition that lights up the holiday season with over 300 homes participating. Visitors can stroll or drive through the neighborhood and are encouraged to make a non-perishable food donation. Candy Cane Lane is bound by Oklahoma Avenue on the south, Montana Avenue to the north, and 96th andholiday 92nd Streets to the west and east, respectively.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra


December 15, 
Bradley Center

Get in the holiday spirit with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra on Dec. 15. $1 from each ticket sold goes to feed the hungry, and Hunger Task Force staff and volunteers will be at the show accepting  food and cash donations when you arrive.

Enjoy the Display and Help Milwaukee!

December 1 – January 2, 770 North Water

M&I, a part of BMO Financial Group, is pleased to announce this year’s Holiday Display, It’s Toy Time at the North Pole, will feature M&I’s collection of more than 150 life-sized costumed animals including lions, kangaroos, penguins, monkeys, bears, and much more. This year, the animals will be dressed as North Pole toy makers and will be seen crafting toys and wrapping presents. The display is free and open to the public.

In addition, for each visitor who signs a thank you card to the hard working elves working at the North Pole, BMO Harris Bank will contribute $5 to Hunger Task Force!
