Farm to table

A guide to CSAs in Southeastern Wisconsin

By - May 22nd, 2011 04:00 am

With the Vernal Equinox firmly behind us, it’s now time to start thinking about the warmth of summer. That means swimming, bringing the word “shorts” back to the vernacular, and the opening of CSAs throughout the nation. Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is an alternative form of getting your vegetables, dairy, and meat — instead of purchasing these items at the grocery store, this model allows you to buy directly from the farm. CSAs focus primarily on growing high quality produce, and raising animals without the use of genetically enhanced feed. This provides a healthy, organic alternative and also a great way to support family farms in Southeastern Wisconsin.

CSAs rely on the “sharing” of their crops. By filling out a simple application, buyers can help pledge support to these farms in exchange for a “share,” or a basket full of the vegetables that you helped to create.

By having a number of pick-up sites, CSAs are able to get their produce to you no matter how far you may live from the actual farm. In addition, many provide a delivery service, ensuring that customers receive the utmost attention for their support.

We’ll make sure to update this list when new information is presented.

Sweet Water Organics
2151 South Robinson Avenue
Milwaukee, WI 53207

Sweet Water’s sustainable aquaponics system was inspired by Will Allen’s (MacArthur Genius Award Winner and Founder of Growing Power) three-tiered, bio-intensive, simulated wetland. In the re-circulating systems, the fish waste acts as natural fertilizer for plant growth and the plants act as a water filter. Our current vegetation includes various lettuce and basil, watercress, tomatoes, peppers, chard, and spinach. Our fish are tilapia and perch. As Sweet Water grows we look to our communities and restaurants to determine what comes next.
