Had your fill of April (snow) showers, yet?

It hasn’t felt much like spring lately, and to be honest, my feet couldn’t be more confused. At the present moment, I’m sitting on top of my numb, wet feet trying to restore the warmth that was lost over the course of a chilly day in paper-thin ballet flats. They seemed totally appropriate when I left this morning, but weather in the Midwest is anything but predictable.

After another grueling winter, I’ve been itching to break out my favorite flats and heels, but  let’s be honest: they’re not always practical in these wishy-washy spring showery days. Enter the new and improved rain boot, a cozy, stylish way to stay warm and dry.

Rain boots have come a long way in the recent years. A far cry from the muckboots of old, now they come in an array of fun (and fashionable!) colors, patterns and heights. From Burberry’s famous plaid boot (which will run you about $300) to the Liberty of London boot sold at Target (a steal at $30), there is surely a boot to fit your price range and your sense of style.

Find a style that you like, and then try pairing your new booties with one of these easy outfits, perfect for casual day or an easy-going weekend look.

Skinny jeans and a t-shirt. This classic look will work for almost any occasion. If your boots have a fun pattern or color, stick with a solid colored tee and a dark wash skinny pant. To finish the look, drape a scarf around your neck so that it hangs straight down on both sides. This will add length to keep you from looking cut off into sections.

Shorts (yes, shorts!). A perfect look for those warm(ish) rainy days. If it’s still too chilly outside, or if you’re just not ready for shorts season, throw on a pair of opaque colored tights. Layer an opened button down shirt over a lacy tank top to add some movement.

Leggings and layered socks. Boots are a perfect partner for a pair of lonely leggings. I especially love the layered sock look, with just a bit of the sock peaking above the top of the boot. Try a pair of thigh-length, cable knit socks for added warmth and texture.

Dresses and skirts. I can’t get enough of the floral print skirts and dresses trend this spring. Pair a black boot with a light and whimsical pattern for a look that’s edgy and feminine at the same time. The contrast will make for a dynamic outfit. Or try a set of fun, flirty patterned boots with a solid dress. Throw on a cute cardigan and you’re set for the day, rain or shine.

Above all, mix and match, and don’t let crumby weather dampen a fearless sense of style. Hopefully these tips will help you (and your wardrobe) get through these last days of April showers…and maybe even May’s flowers.
