Devotchka is not a Blended Spirit

By - Mar 5th, 2011 04:00 am

100 Lovers is Devotchka’s fifth elpee, but it’s the first one I’ve ever heard, and I like it. The strings and articulated rattle of Balkan Folk provide the underpinnings of nearly all of these tracks, with Western Pop and the occasional Mariachi horn chart blended in to keep you guessing.

Putting such wildly disparate elements together could easily (and most likely) end up in disaster, but under the direction of bandleader and vocalist Nick Urata and his highly-dramatic tenor, what you get instead is an amniotic, cinematic sound as big and wide open as the blue Montana sky on a clear day.
