Yes, the snow and ice makes it difficult to get around on a bicycle, let alone hold a race. Still, hardcore cyclists find ways to have fun — in this case by moving things indoors to the open space at Great Lakes Distillery just off the 6th Street Viaduct’s roundabout. They called it Metal Pedal, a free stationary roller-racing event benefiting the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin.

Participants headbanged and cranked their legs on a device that measured RPMs on a projected computer screen for the audience to see. Some of the prizes included a brewery tour for twelve, cases of beer, liquor and apparel from Milwaukee Brewing Co., Lakefront Brewery and Great Lakes Distillery, bar tabs from Vintage, Sabbatic, Sugar Maple, Times Square Pizza and Atomic Chocolate Company and bike swag from Cory The Bike Fixer, Ben’s Cycle and Crank Daddys.

We sent our photo intern Nicole Peaslee to check it out, and this is what she saw.  For more information on the Wisconsin Bicycle Federation, see here.
