Brewcity Bruisers announce 2011 home schedule
It’s been the buzz around Milwaukee roller derby fans all summer, but the Brewcity Bruisers just made it official: the 2011 home season of the skater-owned and operated all-female flat-track roller derby league will be played in its entirety at the US Cellular Arena downtown.
“The 2010 home season experienced a significant amount of growth,” states the Brewcity Bruisers’ press release. “Several hundred people bought standing-room only tickets for each bout” at the Milwaukee County Sports Complex in Franklin, “and others had to be turned away at the door.”
As a result, last May’s 2010 championship bout was moved to the Arena as a trial run, with huge success.
Board member Fidela Castrate says, “This season, it will be much easier for fans to get tickets and have seats with a good view and no one will be turned away at the door. This has been a long-term goal that the league has set and now is achieving. We also have an opportunity to break the modern-day roller derby attendance record of 6,000 plus, which currently belongs to Seattle’s league Rat City.”
The Bruisers have also announced the dates of their 2011 home season bouts, which will see three-time league champs the Rushin’ Rollettes try to win their fourth title in five seasons while contending with the rival Shevil Knevils, Maiden Milwaukee and Crazy 8s: Jan. 8, Feb. 20, March 19, April 16 (semifinals) and May 14 (the 2011 championship).
The upcoming season promises some intrigue, as not only will each team welcome the usual crew of “fresh brew” rookies, but some cagey veterans have switched teams. Watch ThirdCoast Digest for a season preview spotlighting each team as January 8 approaches.
