So *that’s* what City Hall looks like!
(it’s been under scaffolding since I moved here three years ago.)
@Tim I know… I could barely remember City Hall without all the scaffolding. Sure looks good now!
I wonder how our City Hall would look in a skirt. Not really a skirt, of course, but perhaps a green awning at the line separating the two colors of the stonework. Also, I wonder if we could not renovate the lower stones to make them more visually interesting (as they appear to have been in photos from its early years).
BTW, I see (from OnMilwaukee.com and the official papers requesting landmark status) that the correct name for the architectural style of our City Hall is German Renaissance, not Flemish. Apparently, we had been misinformed in years past.
About the awning suggestion, I was just giving an impression that came to mind. I doubt anyone is eager to undertake any more renovations just yet — and I don’t even know if any are needed.. And of course I wouldn’t want to harm the building in any way. (I am not sure, but I think I have seen photos from years past in which at least a partial awning was present.) Indeed, I probably should have first said my ‘congratulations’ to all for the renovations just completed.
I thought they still needed to do foundation work to the building… Isn’t it sinking??
The style has always been an adaptation of the German Renaissance with Romanesque features although there is a mish-mash of other features. Henry Koch would probably be offended by someone calling it Flemish style.
@Dan yes that is a second project to fix City Hall, though I’m not sure when that will begin.
