WLAX Earns Road Win at Cincinnati Thursday Afternoon

Golden Eagles travel to No. 8 Michigan on Sunday

CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Marquette University women’s lacrosse team moved to 3-0 on the season with a 15-9 win at Cincinnati on Thursday afternoon.

The Golden Eagles (3-0, 0-0 BIG EAST) were led by Hanna Bodner and Tess Osburn, who each recorded hat tricks.

Cincinnati scored ten seconds into the game before Marquette scored four unanswered in the first quarter. Mary Velner scored her second career goal with three seconds left to give Marquette a 6-3 advantage after one.

The Bearcats got the game within four goals twice in the third quarter but MU answered at the other end both times. Cincinnati made it a 12-8 game early in the fourth but Hanna Bodner scored a minute later. Meg Bireley sealed the win with her third goal of the game with 45 seconds remaining.

Mikayla Yang earned her first start of the season and seventh of her career. The sophomore saved all six Cincinnati free position attempts she faced and had a career-high eight saves.

Cincinnati (1-3, 0-0 AAC) was led by Lauren Ottensmeyer, who had three goals and one assist.

NOTABLES:

  • Marquette’s 3-0 start matches the best start in program history. MU started 3-0 in 2023 when they finished 15-4 and the program’s first NCAA tournament appearance.
  • The Golden Eagles improve to 10-3 all-time against Cincinnati.
  • Second game this season 8-or-more players scored a point.
  • Meg Bireley moved into a tie for third for most career goals scored (156) with Lydia Foust (2019-23).
  • Bireley moved into a tie for third for most career shots (371) with Shea Garcia (2019-23).
  • Bireley moved into third place on the all-time shots on goal list with 276 shots on goal in her career, passing Lydia Foust who had 275 shots from 2019-23.
  • Sofia Santana had a career-high four ground balls.
  • Tess Osburn’s third hat trick this season and 15th of her career.
  • Hanna Bodner’s second hat trick of the year and third of her career.
  • Lauren Grady had her second game of the season with multiple assists.
