WisDOT adds Rustic Roads to interactive maps
GIS tools make data more accessible, easier to use
Just in time for the changing leaves, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) announced today that Rustic Roads are now available as geographical information system (GIS) maps.
The growing number of interactive, easy to use GIS maps make a wide range of WisDOT information more accessible – whether it is finding the newest Rustic Road (Rustic Road 123 in Winnebago County) or evaluating construction opportunities for the Disadvantaged Business Enterprise Program.“Information that is readily available in a clear, useful format serves the public well,” WisDOT Secretary Craig Thompson said. “I applaud the effort to make more of our data available as GIS map layers and encourage our stakeholders to take advantage of this resource. Whether this information helps you take an enjoyable drive along a Rustic Road as the leaves are changing, or it helps inform a business decision, it is here to serve you.”

- Crash statistics
- Asphalt pricing
- Future construction projects
- Weight restrictions
- Traffic counts
Maps are interactive, allowing users to zoom in and out, add data layers, print, export and perform other actions to present information to fit an audience’s needs. WisDOT provides geospatial data (for use with GIS software and tools) free of charge through WisDOT GIS Open Data. This self-service website provides access to authoritative geographic information systems (GIS) data commonly requested by staff, agency partners and the public. Users can easily search and download GIS data in various formats to meet their needs.

WIS 241 Closed Near Root River in Milwaukee County Due to Flooding

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) encourages drivers to be aware of changing travel conditions. “Know before you go” with 511 Wisconsin, 511wi.gov or via the free app, to view highway closures impacted by flooding and weather alerts across the state. Current highway closure: Milwaukee County WIS 241 (27th Street) near the Root River is closed in both directions, Milwaukee County The timeline for reopening these roads remains unknown, as river levels are still cresting, and additional rain is anticipated. WisDOT officials are closely monitoring the roads and river levels and will reopen them as soon as it is safe to do so. While it’s difficult to predict if or where flooding may occur, WisDOT offers these tips: Flooding conditions may change rapidly so drive with caution at all times. Never drive through standing water or around barriers. As the safety slogan goes, “Turn Around, Don’t Drown!” It only takes a foot of rushing water to sweep away or float most cars and just two feet of rushing water can carry away SUVs and trucks. Just six inches of floodwater will reach the bottom of most passenger cars, causing loss of control and possible stalling. Stay alert and slow down. Follow designated detour routes if state, county and local roads experience flooding. If you must travel, check 511 Wisconsin for the latest information on any road closures or impacts.
