Wisconsin Republicans Spend $8.5 Million Hurting Wisconsinites
Legislative Fiscal Bureau Estimates GOP Lawmakers Spent Millions Suing To End Mask Mandate and COVID-19 Protections, Defending Gerrymandering
MADISON, Wis. — According to a new report from the nonpartisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau, GOP lawmakers have spent $8.5 million in taxpayer dollars on lawsuits over the past three years. The lawsuits include suing to end the mask mandate and other COVID-19 protections, remove pandemic-era voting protections, and defend gerrymandered maps.
GOP lawmakers have wasted even more taxpayer dollars on their political priorities this year – rejecting $1.6 billion from the federal government for expanding BadgerCare and putting an additional $2.3 billion at risk for failing to invest in our schools.“Wisconsin Republicans need to get their priorities straight,” said Democratic Party of Wisconsin Rapid Response Director Kayla Anderson. “They’ll spend millions on lawsuits seeking to hurt Wisconsinites, strip them of their voting rights, remove pandemic protections, and defend a partisan redistricting process – but they won’t spend a dime on affordable health care or adequate education funding. Wisconsinites don’t want their taxpayer dollars wasted on politically-motivated lawsuits. It’s time for the legislature to put people above partisanship and get back to work passing the governor’s Badger Bounceback agenda.”
