Wisconsin Legislative Black Caucus Statement on Wednesday’s Madison Police Shooting
MADISON WI- Following yesterday’s fatal police shooting in Madison, the members of the Wisconsin Legislative Black Caucus released the following statement.
“Yesterday, Madison police officers shot and killed Corey Ruiz in the street, which was broadcast online for the entire world to witness. Through videos captured from various angles and perspectives, we were all present as a man was tackled from his bicycle, held down, tased, and subsequently shot three times at point-blank range with multiple officers present.
“Our heartfelt prayers are with the loved ones of Corey Ruiz, who have suffered an unimaginable loss, and with the entire Madison community grappling with the trauma this has caused. Like many Black Americans who watch this video online, we recognize that such situations can happen to anyone, including family, friends, loved ones, and even as legislators ourselves. While details and a full account of the events unfold, we cannot ignore the reality that the pain we feel has become all too familiar and normalized.
“All life deserves to be valued and safeguarded by those in power. As elected leaders, it is our duty to ensure this happens. We must learn from our past and take immediate action to build trust, transparency, accountability, and provide the necessary support to protect all life. This work should commence now, even as independent investigations continue. As elected leaders, we reaffirm our commitment to being a steadfast partner for justice and dignity in every human life.”
