Wisconsin Conservation Voters condemns Trump’s latest attack on Wisconsin’s environment and future
MADISON – President Trump’s sweeping anti-climate Executive Order issued Tuesday is a dangerous, unconstitutional attack on Wisconsin’s right to lead on clean energy, climate resilience, and environmental justice. Wisconsin Conservation Voters condemns this dangerous and extreme move that threatens the health, safety, and future of our state and its people.
“This is one of the most extreme and reckless attacks on Wisconsin’s future we’ve ever seen,” said Executive Director Kerry Schumann. “It’s not just an assault on clean energy – it’s an assault on our right to protect our communities, our economy, our health, and our environment. Wisconsinites won’t be bullied into propping up out-of-state fossil fuels. We will keep fighting for a cleaner, safer, and more affordable future.”
Trump’s order would force Wisconsin to rely on expensive, outdated, out-of-state, dangerous fossil fuels – rolling back hard-won progress, threatening lives, and driving up costs for families and businesses alike. It’s a giveaway to Big Oil and coal CEOs at the expense of Wisconsin communities.
The climate crisis is already hitting home – from historic floods, to choking algae blooms in our lakes, to extreme heat threatening the health and safety of our cities and farms. Climate change is harming the health of Wisconsinites. Rising temperatures are driving more heat-related illnesses, while worsening air quality is triggering asthma and heart disease. Flooding and extreme weather are causing injuries and trauma, and warmer conditions are spreading tick- and mosquito-borne diseases like Lyme and West Nile. These threats are growing – and they demand urgent action. Now is the time to lead, not to be dragged backward by an extremist federal administration.
Wisconsin Conservation Voters stands with everyone defending the right to chart our own clean energy future. This is more than a policy dispute – it’s a fight for Wisconsin’s economy, environment, public health, and democracy.
“We’re already working alongside partners across the country and in Washington, D.C., to build strong defenses against these craven attacks – because this isn’t just about policy, it’s about power,” Schumann said. “This Executive Order is designed to make the richest people in the world even richer while stripping communities of the tools they need to build a healthier, safer, and more equitable future. We will not let that stand. Together, we’re pushing back and we’re moving forward.”
