WBB Takes Down St. John’s in New York, 66-65
QUEENS, N.Y. – Leading by one with 22 seconds remaining, Marquette needed one defensive stop and got it, defeating St. John’s 56-55 in a tightly contested game on Wednesday night at Carnesecca Arena. It was just the second win of the year for MU when scoring less than 67 points.
Skylar Forbes (12) and Lee Volker (11) led the Golden Eagles in scoring with each reaching double figures.
MU then regained the lead on a triple in transition from Forbes that made the score 26-25 with 3:47 left in the half. The Red Storm came back with five of their own and took a three-point lead into the half.
Following a 6-0 run by St. John’s midway through the third, a timeout with 6:20 on the clock form Cara Consuegra settled her team down. The Golden Eagles finished the quarter with an 8-2 stretch to pull to 40-39 with 10 minutes remaining.
The Red Storm jumped back out to a four-point lead two minutes into the fourth following a 3-pointer from Brooke Moore. Attacking the paint, MU scored six straight to grab the lead with 6:27 to play, its first lead in 17 minutes. After St. John’s tied up the game Marquette continued its run with buckets inside from Halle Vice and Volker with four minutes left. They were MU’s last buckets for the remainder of the game.
After St. John’s tied up the game at 55-55 and got a defensive stop, Olivia Porter pulled down a rebound with the Red Storm looking to take the lead. Fouled with 22 seconds on the clock, the senior split a pair to put the Golden Eagles up one. On the last possession, Forbes stood tall contesting turnaround jumper in the paint and coming up with a steal in a scramble for the ball.

Marquette continues its road swing on Sunday, heading to Butler. Tipoff at Hinkle Fieldhouse is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET/1 p.m. CT and will stream on ESPN+.
