MILWAUKEE – The Marquette women’s basketball team returns home for two games this week beginning with Seton Hall on Wednesday night. The Golden Eagles sit a half-game ahead of the Pirates for third in the BIG EAST standings.

[inrticlead]Tipoff from the Al McGuire Center is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT. Bob Brainerd (pxp) and Chloe Marotta (analyst) will be on the call for ESPN+.

THE STARTING FIVE

  • Marquette saw its season-long five-game winning streak snapped on Sunday at Creighton. CU’s 80 points were the most allowed by MU in a game since UConn scored 89 on Dec. 17 in Hartford. During the Golden Eagles’ previous five road games, they had not allowed more than 64 points.
  • Without a 20-point game since Jan. 4, Skylar Forbes broke out for 22 and 21 during the past week to earn herself a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. The 43 points were more than the junior had scored during her previous four appearances. Forbes shot 54.8% from the field during the two-game stretch.
  • Picking up an injury during the second week of January, Halle Vice has returned to from in the past two weeks. During the last five games, the junior who leads the BIG EAST in double-doubles with 10, has averaged 16.6 points, 9.4 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game.
  • Bolstered by a pair of 20-point performances in the past month, Lee Volker has been a consistent scoring threat for MU, averaging 14.8 points per game during her last eight. A chunk of those points have come from beyond the arc where the grad student has shot 52.5% during the stretch (21-of-40).
  • Marquette’s strength this season comes in its experience and continuity as the program is the only one in Division I women’s college basketball to return all of its players from the 2024-25 season. Though everyone returned, the Golden Eagles have had just two games this season (Winthrop, Georgetown) with everyone available (excluding J.J. Barnes and Aryelle Stevens who were ruled out for the year heading into the season).

BY THE NUMBERS
8
 – Outscored by 15 in points off turnovers at Creighton, it was Marquette’s eighth loss this season when outscored in the category. MU is 5-8 on the year when outscored in POT.
43 – Scoring just 21 points combined in her two games prior to Feb. 4, Skylar Forbes has posted games of 22 and 21 in her last two games. It was the first time she has posted back-to-back 20-point games this season.
52.5% – Ranking 12th in the NCAA in 3-point percentage at 45.0%, Lee Volker’s percentage has risen in the last month where she has made 52.5% from deep during her last 10 outings.

FLASHING BACK – GAME 24 AT CREIGHTON

  • Marquette dropped to 2-6 in its last eight games against Creighton.
  • Skylar Forbes (21), Halle Vice (15) and Lee Volker (13) each reached double figures for the fourth straight game.
  • Jaidynn Mason added 11 points, her fourth game in the last five in double figures.
  • Forbes posted her sixth 20-point game of the season, finishing with 21.
  • The junior is 21 points away from scoring 1,000 points in her career.
  • Vice finished with a team-high eight rebounds, snapping her streak of three games in a row with a double-double.

HISTORY WITH THE PIRATES

  • Marquette and Seton Hall will meet for the 35th time in their history.
  • Marquette holds the series lead at 21-13.
  • The Golden Eagles and Pirates have split the last six meetings.
  • Seton Hall won this year’s first match-up between the two teams, 64-61, in South Orange, N.J., on Jan. 14.

START ON THE FRONT FOOT
While some teams can start slow and pick up steam in games, Marquette has struggled a bit in doing that. Eight times this season, the Golden Eagles opponents’ haven’t scored first. MU is 2-7 in those games compared to 14-1 when scoring first.

  • The tip has also been an indicator the Golden Eagles as they are 1-4 this season when losing the tipoff. At Butler on Jan. 25, Marquette won its first game of the year when losing the tip.

PROTECTING THE AL
Since Cara Consuegra took over last season, the Golden Eagles have been dominant at the Al McGuire Center. In 26 games on its home court, Marquette is 22-4.

  • This season, MU is 9-2 at home with eight of those wins coming by double digits. Four of those wins have been by 25 or more.

DIALING UP FROM LONG DISTANCE
A 41.5% 3-point shooter a season ago, Lee Volker has bumped that number up to 45.0% this year and ranks 12th in the NCAA. That number has the grad student 0.2% ahead of her former AAU teammate Azzi Fudd for the top spot in the BIG EAST.

  • Volker has shot over 50% in five of the last eight games, and is a combined 21-of-40 during the stretch (52.5%).

ELITE COMBINATION
Not just a shot blocker, not just a 3-point shooter, Skylar Forbes is proving this season that she is both. Forbes is currently shooting 37.3% from deep while also posting 1.91 blocks per game (27th).

  • Forbes is one of two players in the country currently averaging 1.9 blocks per game and shooting over 37% from 3 (min. 30 attempts) along with Miami (OH)’s Ilse de Vries.
  • Forbes is one of four players in the country who has attempted at least 100 3-pointers while averaging 1.9 blocks per game.

A WALKING DOUBLE-DOUBLE
Recording her 10th double-double of the season on Feb. 4, Halle Vice continues to lead the BIG EAST in the category. The junior had just one double-double through the first five weeks of the season but has recorded six during an eight-game stretch from Dec. 14-Jan. 14. Working through an injury, Vice was without one for a three-game stretch before recording one in each of her last three outings.

  • Her stretch of four straight games (Dec. 20-Jan. 4) with a double-double is the longest stretch of consecutive double-doubles by a Golden Eagle since Erika Davenport had a double-double in five straight games in 2019 (Jan. 11-25).
  • Vice’s 10 double-doubles ranks 24th in the NCAA. Nine of them have come in her last 14 games.
