WBB Drops Game at Seton Hall, 64-61
Volker finishes with team-high 20 points.
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – A game of opposing double-digit runs in the first half turned into a nip-and-tuck affair in the fourth quarter as Marquette (11-6, 5-3 BIG EAST) fell 64-61 at Seton Hall (12-5, 6-2 BIG EAST) on Wednesday night at Walsh Gymnasium. Leading by one with 3:41 to play, the Golden Eagles went three-and-a-half minutes without a field goal.
Lee Volker led MU with 20 points on 6-of-11 shooting, 4-of-7 from 3. Halle Vice added a double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds.
The Golden Eagles’ run continued out of the stoppage as they scored 16 unanswered before Steon Hall scored the final four points of the quarter. The Pirates’ two made field goals ended a string of 17 consecutive missed shots.
Taking a 20-9 lead into the second, Marquette’s offense went cold. Turning the ball over six times and missing on their first six attempts of the second quarter, the Golden Eagles’ advantage was gone with three minutes left in the half. After SHU regained the lead at 22-20 with 2:15 on the clock, Charia Smith answered at the other end with an and-one.
MU closed the quarter with the final five points to take a 25-22 lead at the half despite having a string of 12 straight missed field goals that stretched from the end of the first and into the second quarters.
The Golden Eagles built their lead up to as much as eight in the third before the Pirates hit a 10-0 in the final minutes. MU trailed 41-40 heading into the final 10 minutes.
