Veterans Homes Closing Tomorrow Due to Republican Incompetence

MADISON, Wis. — Tomorrow, two veterans homes — one in Chippewa Falls and another in Green Bay — will shut their doors. The closures are the direct result of Wisconsin legislative Republicans’ failure to fund these critical facilities, despite repeated efforts by Democrats and Governor Tony Evers to secure the necessary support. Rather than working to keep these homes open, Republican lawmakers have spent the past month dodging responsibility and attempting to shift blame.

“Republicans in Wisconsin have shown they’re more interested in playing political games than helping the very people who risked their lives for this country,” said Philip Shulman, spokesperson for the Democratic Party of Wisconsin. “Instead of taking real action to secure funding, they signed a hypocritical letter and called it a day, forcing veterans to find new shelter just as Wisconsin’s winter approaches.”

Making matters worse, Congressman Derrick Van Orden, who sits on the U.S. House Veterans’ Affairs Committee has refused to call on his Republican colleagues in the state legislature to act. He has also failed to use his federal position to push for funding for the Chippewa Falls home. But he’s found plenty of time to blame Gov. Evers, despite the governor including funding in his state budget that the Republicans went on to strip out.
