(MADISON)—Today, Senator Tim Carpenter (D-Milwaukee) issued the following statement:

“I’m excited that the United States Postal Service has unveiled a new Henry “Hank” Aaron postage stamp to commemorate the 50tu anniversary of his record breaking 715th home run on April 8, 1974.

“More than two years ago, I wrote a letter with a group of colleagues to the Citizen’s Stamp Advisory Committee, requesting that Hank Aaron be recognized on a postage stamp. The Committee acknowledged receipt of the letter and ultimately recommended the idea to the postmaster general.”

Henry “Hank” Aaron was born on February 5, 1934 and died on January 22, 2021. He was a baseball legend, humanitarian and philanthropist. He faced racism throughout his whole career, especially as he approached and eventually surpassed Babe Ruth’s homerun record, but he did not let the hate stop him from playing baseball, and he set a precedent in the league by speaking out against unfair treatment. Aaron was a lifelong advocate and supporter of the Civil Rights Movement. He was inducted into the baseball hall of fame on August 1, 1982.

The Hank Aaron stamp will be a forever stamp. It will be issued in panes of 20 at a date to be determined.

“I’d like to thank my colleagues who signed onto the letter, the members of the Citizen Stamp Advisory Committee and the artists at the United States Postal Service who designed the stamp.”
