Union Members and Retirees Targeted in Phone Scam

IBEW Local 494 has received multiple calls from members and retirees, complaining of a phone scam involving someone claiming to represent the union.

IBEW Local 494 is warning members and retirees to be on alert for a phone scam that primarily targets members and retirees while displaying the IBEW Local 494 telephone number on the recipient’s caller ID.

IBEW Local 494 has received multiple calls from members and retirees, complaining of a phone scam involving someone claiming to represent the union. In those cases, the caller advised the members and retirees of a change in benefits and can adjust their account on the phone. The caller is offering the members and retirees they will be in the neighborhood and can personally adjust their benefits at their home.

During each attempt to gain personally identifiable information from the members and retirees, the caller claims to have specific member and retiree information. In addition, the originating telephone number used by the scammer is displayed or “spoofed” as that of the telephone number of the IBEW Local 494 union hall.

It is reminded that the IBEW Local 494 does not call members or retirees requesting money and to never give out unsolicited requests for personal information to callers that you don’t know.
