MADISON – The following is the statement of Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair, Martha Laning, on the appointment of billionaire voucher school financier, Betsy DeVos, as Secretary of Education:
“Wisconsin knows first hand the danger Betsy DeVos poses as head of the Department of Education. DeVos’ American Federation for Children has invested nearly $5 million in Wisconsin elections in the last six years and spearheaded the effort to take money away from public schools to benefit unaccountable private schools in our state.
“The results of DeVos’ crusade in our state has been far less accountability and a failure to invest in the children attending our public schools. DeVos’ work in Wisconsin should supremely disqualify her to run the Department of Education.
“While I hope that the Trump administration will work with Democrats to help all children in our nation get the quality education they deserve. This appointment is very disappointing to me, it is clearly one of pure ideology and a signal that privatizing schools and defunding public education are top priorities for the President-Elect.”

DeVos could easily have spent $5 million of her own fortune on helping establish religious and other private schools in Wisconsin, without having to take any money away from the public schools, but it is evident from her choice to lobby instead of donate, that destruction of the public school system, with its focus on preparing students to be citizens and to think critically, is her real objective. An uneducated population will be easier to mislead and easier to control. We will have Trumpism everywhere. The 20th Century is being erased.
