Tom Nelson Calls for “The Packers Rule” Ban on Members of Congress and Their Families from Trading Stocks on Insider Information
Appleton, Wis. – Grassroots populist and Outagamie County Executive Tom Nelson today released a video denouncing members of Congress for trading individual stocks on insider information and calling for a ban of the practice, which he named “The Packers Rule.” People with Packers stock can’t trade it willy nilly, and members of Congress and their families shouldn’t be allowed to either.
This video is the latest in a series of statements Nelson has made calling for a ban on members of Congress being able to trade stock due to their unique position receiving insider information (Axios, 1/12/22) (Politico, 1/12/22) (The Hill, 1/11/22).
Transcript:
TOM: I’m Tom Nelson, candidate for the U.S. Senate. Did you know that members of Congress are making millions of dollars every year by buying and selling, trading stock? Can you imagine that? They’re taking advantage of insider information to enrich themselves.
TOM: We ought to pass a law that bans stock trading for members of Congress and their families. But as far as stock goes, who cares about trading, because the only stock that matters, at least here in Wisconsin, is Packers stock, which of course you can’t trade. So, let’s call the new law “The Packers Rule.”
TOM: Now look, the Packers, they aren’t owned by the millionaires and the billionaires. They’re owned by people like you and I.
TOM: Now I don’t have any insider information on how well the 49ers are going to do today. But, what I can do is, in the meantime, cheer hard for the Packers, and when I get to the U.S. Senate, pass a ban on stock trading for members of Congress and their families. It’s the right thing to do.
