MINNEAPOLIS / February 10, 2015 — HGA Architects and Engineers (HGA) announced today that its Board of Directors unanimously named Tim Carl, FAIA, as the firm’s new CEO. Carl’s appointment, which was effective February 1, 2015, is the culmination of a 16-month long leadership transition. He succeeds Dan Avchen, FAIA, who served as HGA’s CEO since 1996.

“Throughout HGA’s growth from a regional to a national firm, design excellence has always been at the heart of our philosophy and practice, and no one understands how to usher that legacy into the future better than Tim,” said Avchen, who will continue with HGA and focus on the firm’s strategic direction. “Tim is a consummate designer and leader, and he recognizes the many opportunities for growth and innovation both within our firm and for our clients.”

Carl, 51, has been with HGA for 17 years and most recently held the title of design principal, working with teams in each HGA office. In addition to multiple regional and national design awards, Carl has led the design efforts for University of Minnesota’s Northrop Auditorium renovation, the expansion and renovation of General Mills’ headquarters, the Nelson Cultural Center addition to the American Swedish Institute and the soon to open new concert hall for the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. He is currently leading the design on a new Conservatory of Music and Dance for the University of Missouri Kansas City.

“Dan and the senior leadership at HGA have built an extraordinary architectural firm, and I am honored to have this opportunity,” said Carl. “Our legacy is built on a culture of collaboration across a tremendous diversity of talent – bringing the best ideas forward for clients in nine industries ranging from healthcare and corporate environments to higher education and energy infrastructure. This is an exciting time for HGA, and I am looking forward to the future and working with our teams and clients throughout the country.”

Ranked among the top 10 architecture and engineering firms in the United States (according to Building Design + Construction’s annual rankings), HGA recently completed its fifth acquisition in San Jose, California. With more than 650 employees, the firm now has offices in Minneapolis and Rochester, Minnesota; Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sacramento and San Jose, California; Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Washington D.C.
