The Rev. Dr. Carmen Porco Retires After 50 Years of Serving Communities in Madison, Milwaukee and Beyond
MADISON, WIS.–One of Wisconsin’s best-known advocates of low-income housing–The Rev. Dr. Carmen Porco–announced his retirement on June 14, 2024, following 50-plus years of serving communities locally, nationally, and globally. He retires as CEO of Housing Ministries of Wisconsin.
With his groundbreaking work transforming lives and communities and mentoring kindred spirits to do the same and his revolutionary Wisconsin Anti-Poverty Model, these endeavors have lifted residents out of financial hardship, increased the grade point averages of school-aged children while reducing teen pregnancy and problem behavior, secured funding for higher education scholarships, and have diminished crime rates to the point these housing developments have some of the lowest number of incidents in their communities.
As an ordained Baptist minister, Porco has spoken in both secular and spiritual settings, including at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the Said College of Business at Oxford University where there is now an endowed chair in his name. Among the several honors and awards he has received, recent accolades include the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award from the City of Madison and Dane County, and as a Badger Bioneer from Sustain Dane. He was also given the Champion of Change Award from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and four Hammer Awards from former Vice President Al Gore.
