Support welcome and appreciated during Vigil for Trans Lives
Alderwoman JoCasta Zamarripa March 1, 2023
The Milwaukee LGBT Community Center is holding a Vigil for Trans Lives this evening from 5P-7P at 315 W. Court St., Milwaukee, to remember Cashay Henderson, who was murdered over the weekend on the north side. Cashay is the fourth Black Trans woman who has been killed in the past nine months in the City of Milwaukee.
Brazil Johnson, Mya Allen, Toi Davis, and now Cashay Henderson – all gone in less than a year and our hearts cannot take another loss, yet we know the harsh reality – transgender women of color suffer higher rates of violence than their straight, lesbian, gay, bi, and white trans counterparts.
As a community, we must be present and we must be vocal in our support of the Trans population in our city. We must be willing to spread encouragement, support, and selfless pro-Trans advocacy whenever possible. We must demand justice for anyone perpetrating acts of violence against transgender individuals in Milwaukee.
As an elected official, I will continue to use my platform to advocate for greater rights and protections for transgender people across our city and state, and I urge all advocates, community members, and transgender allies everywhere to join me in a sustained and strong push against anti-trans rhetoric and violence.
