MILWAUKEE – Yesterday, December 14, 2023, the Committee on Finance approved an amended resolution that would allocate the 2023 Parks Department surplus toward maintenance and capital projects within Milwaukee County Parks. The amended resolution uses surplus revenues to allocate $1,000,000 for major Maintenance and Capital Projects in Parks, outlined in the report provided by the Parks Department, and an additional $300,000 for aquatic facility infrastructure needs. Supervisors Patti Logsdon, Caroline Gómez-Tom, and Steven Shea issued the following statements highlighting their support of the resolution:

“Additional streams of revenue and disciplined financial management by the County Board and the Parks Department have yielded a substantial surplus this year.  Allocating an extra $300,000 for beach, deep well pool, wading pool, and splash pad infrastructure is an important investment for our community.” Said Supervisor Logsdon.

Supervisor Gómez-Tom added, “In the summer, residents depend on having access to our pools, beaches, and splash pads. Directing this surplus toward essential maintenance equips the Parks Department to open more aquatic facilities, which helps enhance community access and enjoyment.”

“This exciting opportunity resonates with the County’s commitment to enhancing and sustaining public spaces. This resolution underscores our dedication to ensuring equitable access to quality parks, pools, beaches, and splash pads throughout the County.” Said Supervisor Shea.

This resolution seeks to elevate the overall quality of parks by identifying specific projects for funding based on their significance and Parks Equity Index Scores. The Committee on Parks and Culture approved the amended resolution earlier this week with a 4-1 vote, while the Committee on Finance voted 6-1 to approve it.  The full County Board is set to vote on this resolution on December 21.

A heartening move by enlightened Supervisors. A dent in the deferred maintenance backlog, but still meaningful.
