MILWAUKEE – On Saturday, February 25 Supervisors Peter Burgelis and Juan Miguel Martinez will host a public meeting at Milwaukee Spanish Immersion School (2765 S. 55th St.) from 10 a.m.-noon to discuss a Milwaukee County Parks Department proposal to update sections of Jackson Park Drive.

“As a homeowner on Jackson Park Drive, I understand the concerns voiced by many residents about the Parks Department’s proposed changes to this street,” said Supervisor Burgelis. “After the first public meeting, I saw a need for more community input and discussion. I hope neighbors and those who use Jackson Park Drive will join the conversation about this project. Our parks are an asset to Milwaukee County residents, but they have over $500 million in deferred maintenance needs. Long-term, cost-effective solutions are needed to ensure their future.”

“Projects like these hold a tremendous amount of weight, and without public input they are just ideas,” said Supervisor Martinez. “When residents speak up real change can be made. I am elated to host this community discussion with Supervisor Burgelis and many more down the line. My constituents are my bosses and being able to listen and properly relay their collective voice to county departments is the most important part of my job, and one I enjoy.”

“The Parks Department is eager to hear from the community and park users about this proposed project,” said Milwaukee County Parks Executive Director Guy Smith. “We are always open to creative ways to maintain our Parks’ amenities and infrastructure for the public’s enjoyment and use.”

The Parks Department plan would affect sections of Jackson Park Drive from West Cleveland Avenue at 47th Street to West Cleveland Avenue at 58th Street. The department proposes narrowing segments of the roadway with driveway access and replacing the portion of the road without residential driveway access with a 10’ wide asphalted bike and pedestrian trail.

Residents will have the opportunity to raise questions and concerns with County Supervisors and staff from the Parks Department and County Executive’s office at the meeting.
