Supervisor Vincent Resolution Urging Free Fishing Licenses for Seniors Adopted
MILWAUKEE – Yesterday the County Board of Supervisors unanimously adopted a resolution authored by Supervisor Kathleen Vincent calling on the State of Wisconsin to waive annual fishing license fees for Wisconsin seniors.
“Fishing is a pastime that has been enjoyed by generations of Wisconsinites dating back hundreds of years,” said Supervisor Vincent. “As Milwaukee County continues its work to become the healthiest county in the state, we must do all that we can to reduce barriers to outdoor activities and encourage residents to get out into nature. Our seniors have contributed so much to our community over their lives. Offering free fishing licenses is the least we can do to thank them. I am proud that the entire Board signed on as co-sponsored to this resolution. I am happy to see us come together to unify around an issue that can positively impact so many lives in Milwaukee County.”
Wisconsin currently charges $6.25 for an annual fishing license issued to a resident senior citizen.
Casting and reeling a fishing rod can provide essential movement that aids with hand strength, motor skills and dexterity, especially in older adults.
The resolution requests that Milwaukee County’s Office of Government Affairs communicates this policy position to state policymakers.
